"It has been pretty crazy, I mean it typically is this time of year, but it definitely feels a little busier than years past," Jessica Caldwell, manager of Stowe Mercantile, told WCAX on October 11. In the same report, she said downtown parking had been hard for employees and customers alike. One visitor told the station that her husband took about fifteen minutes to drive a stretch she covered in a couple of minutes on foot. Local businesses told WCAX that peak foliage, more than ski or holiday season, is their busiest stretch of the year.
That busy stretch is ending, and the weeks after it don't empty the whole town at once. The resort side of Stowe closes in a set order over one week in October and starts reopening around November 20. In between, the town side has a full calendar. The dates below come from the posted schedules, so anyone who lives here can plan by them.
The mountain closes in a set order
Spruce Peak and Stowe Mountain Resort have posted their fall changes, and they cluster tightly:
- October 5. All restaurants, the spa, and retail outlets run by Spruce Peak stopped taking cash. Payment is by credit card or room charge only.
- October 11. Zamboni's Creemee Hut on the village green closed for the season. The WhistlePig Pavilion started a break. The Pantry cut its hours to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Beanery Cafe to 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Stowe Rocks indoor climbing gym's posted weekend hours also ran only through October 11.
- October 17. The free Harvest Festival, part of the resort's Seasons at Stowe series, brings live music and food from local producers to the base of Mount Mansfield.
- October 18. The Gondola SkyRide and the Scenic Auto Toll Road both end their seasons. Pico Taco starts a short break. Tipsy Trout moves to closing Monday through Wednesday.
By the Sunday after Harvest Festival, the mountain's summer and fall activities are closed. What stays open at the base is a smaller set of restaurants on reduced hours.
What stays open at the base
Alpine Hall still lists breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. The menu is from Chef Sean Blomgren and is built around Vermont growers and makers. Alpine Hall also serves free drip coffee from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. daily. The WhistlePig Tasting Shack lists hours of Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tipsy Trout stays open on its reduced weekly schedule.
With the Pantry closing at 3 p.m., the village has no grab-and-go option in the evening until the winter schedule starts.
Mountain Road has a new daily option
Further down Mountain Road, the newest restaurant in town keeps longer hours than anything at the base. Barbarian, at 454 Mountain Road, took over the former McCarthy's space, which had most recently been Skinny Pancake. In May, Seven Days reported that owners Michelle and Matthew Merrifield planned to open by the end of June with American classics given a twist. The restaurant's own site now lists it as open every day, with breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m.
That makes this Barbarian's first stick season, so its first fall in the McCarthy's space comes with posted daily hours. That's a meaningful detail on a road where many places change their schedules this time of year. Those posted hours also cover the stretch when the WhistlePig Pavilion and Pico Taco are on break, from mid-October to November 20. As with any new spot heading into its first off-season, it's worth checking the site before you drive over.
The valley calendar stays full
Away from the mountain, the Go Stowe events calendar has events through the rest of October and well into November, mostly at venues in and around the village.

Some events repeat. Apres Only hosts an open mic on Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m. through November. The Spooky BOOze Tour runs Friday and Saturday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on October 23, 24, 30, and 31. Treat Yourself Tuesdays happen weekly from 4 to 7 p.m. For time outside, the Fall to Winter Forests guided hike is scheduled for October 24 and November 14, and Trails and Tales, a guided hike with storytime, is on the morning of November 7.
The calendar lists the Stowe Farmers Market on October 18 and 25. Treat those two Sundays as the market dates to count on.
Two changes on the drive into town
Both of this season's road changes are on routes residents use every day, and one lasts through the end of November.
Weeks Hill Road Bridge, near Mayo Farm Road, closed on September 30 at 9 a.m. so a new bridge can be built. According to the Town of Stowe, the closure is expected to last through the end of November, with a signed detour in place. Weeks Hill Road had more traffic than usual this month. The Stowe Foliage Arts Festival came back October 9 to 11 at a new venue, Stowe Events Field at 120 Weeks Hill Road.
At the intersection of Route 108 and Cape Cod Road, the town and VTrans have set up a temporary three-way stop. It started October 8 at 7 a.m. and is expected to stay through Wednesday, October 21. Unlike the bridge detour, that one ends within the next ten days.
Further up Route 108, the 2026 closing date for Smugglers' Notch hasn't been announced. For a sense of timing, WCAX reported that the Notch road was set to close at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, possibly for the rest of the winter. This year's road opened at noon on May 4. Until VTrans posts this year's date, plan any trip over the Notch toward Jeffersonville for the next few weeks, not for late November.
Spruce Peak's reopening dates are set. Opening day isn't.
The reopening dates are as specific as the closing ones. The WhistlePig Pavilion and Pico Taco both list November 20, 2026 for the return of daily winter service. Tipsy Trout's page on the Spruce Peak site lists November 25. The Hyatt page for the Lodge at Spruce Peak gives a different date, saying Tipsy Trout's daily winter hours start November 28. If you have a Thanksgiving-week reservation there, confirm it directly. The Linehouse reopens as Mistletoe's Holiday Bar on November 27, open nightly from 6 p.m.
The ski season itself doesn't have a date yet. Vail Resorts' August 18 opening-dates announcement left Stowe off its list and said more resort dates would come later. Some ski sites show a projected date, but no official Stowe opening day had been posted as of October 12. The firmest dates on Stowe's calendar right now are November 20, when Spruce Peak's first restaurants return to daily service, and the end of November, when Weeks Hill Road is expected to reopen.
Stick season is when many Stowe homeowners plan for winter and spring, whether that means prep work before a listing or a move within Lamoille or Chittenden County.
